Can you tell about the work/life balance of residents? A typical day for an intern and average hours per week? Thanks!

ReplyDeleteThe typical work day and the hours a week really depend on the service that you’re on. As an intern, you have 5 blocks when you’re a part of an inpatient academic team @ CNMC (General medicine team x2 months, GI/Intestinal Rehab/Liver team, Pulmonary/Adolescent team, Neurology/Endocrinology team). During those months, a typical day consists of:
6am: Arriving to the hospital to receive sign out from the night team
6am-8am: Pre-round on your patients (Morning report on Tues/Thurs from 7:30-8:00am)
8am-8:30/9am: Teaching by senior, fellow, or attending (Grand Rounds Wednesday mornings 8-9am)
8:30/9am-10:30/11am: Patient-centered rounds
10:30/11am-12p: Taking care of to-do’s (consults, placing orders, working on discharges, etc.)
12pm-1pm: Noon conference (Professional Rounds Thursdays)
1pm-5pm: Return to the floor for more team-related tasks/patient care
5pm: Night team comes to take over
Obviously, except for the teaching/conference schedule, the specific hours are not set in stone (ex. rounds might end earlier/later depending on the census), but that’s the typical day as an intern on the academic teams, the months that are usually the busiest. The hours tend to be better in the other months, especially during your clinic and elective months.
As for our personal lives, although we do work hard here @ Children’s, we definitely enjoy our time off! We’re tremendously close-knit as residents, so we can’t help but spend more time with each other outside of the hospital as well! We usually have at least one organized happy hour a week, and there are invites sent out constantly for get-togethers/activities not only among the classes but also to the entire program as well. Being located in the center of DC, whether it’s going to sports event and shows, trying out new restaurants and bars, or visiting the tourist spots, there are always fun things to do to balance out the work life.
In regards to the attendings…they are great! Although CNMC is a big institution, the attendings make themselves available as much as they can. I have never feeling like the only way I can interact with them is through my senior or fellow, and they place a strong emphasis on your education while being willing to help with the patient care as a team. Although I would be lying if I say that every attending that I’ve worked with is equally personable, almost all of them have been nice and tremendously easy to work with. If you know that you’re interested in a certain subspecialty, the attendings are also more than happy to do what they can to help you reach your professional goals!
